Srikalahasti is one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, representing the element of Vayu (air) among the five elements. Within the sanctum, a hanging lamp with two wicks moves continuously, even when there is no breeze—a phenomenon considered a divine sign of the presence of Vayu Lingam. The Shiva Lingam is said to be square-shaped, surrounded by a sacred shield with nine steps, each representing one of the Navagrahas (nine planets).
The name Srikalahasti is derived from a touching legend involving three devoted beings—Sri, the spider; Kala, the serpent; and Hasti, the elephant—each offering their unique form of worship to Lord Shiva. The spider wove a delicate web over the Shiva Lingam to shield it from dust and falling leaves. The serpent, with deep reverence, adorned the Lingam with a Naga Manikyam, a divine gem. Meanwhile, the elephant expressed its devotion by performing daily abhishekam, bathing the Lingam with water from its trunk.
A tragic conflict arose when the elephant accidentally disturbed the spider’s web and the serpent. In the ensuing fight; The serpent entered the elephant’s trunk, The elephant, in agony, smashed its trunk on the Shivalinga, All three died in the process. Lord Shiva, moved by their deep devotion and sacrifice, granted them moksha (liberation) and named the temple in their honor. The Shiva Lingam here is believed to bear the marks of their devotion—the spider’s web, serpent’s coils, and elephant’s tusk marks.
Srikalahasti is world-renowned for its Rahu-Ketu Pooja, a unique ritual performed to ease the negative effects of Rahu and Ketu in one’s horoscope. Believed to bring peace, remove obstacles, and enhance personal growth. Performed daily, with Tuesdays and Sundays being particularly auspicious. The temple is regarded as Dakshina Kashi, a southern counterpart to Varanasi. Legends say a fragment of Mount Kailasa fell here during the creation of the world by Brahma, making it a sacred and powerful site. To preserve sanctity, mobile phones and cameras are strictly prohibited inside the temple premises.
Supported by dynasties like the Tamil Cholas and the Vijayanagara Empire, the temple has seen centuries of patronage. Adi Shankaracharya is believed to have visited and worshipped here. Chola inscriptions dating back to the 10th century CE are found in the temple. The Telugu literary work Sri Kalahasti Satakam elaborates the temple’s traditions.
