Description
The renowned Kodungalloor Bharani, an annual festival at the Sree Kurumba Bhagavathy Temple, captivates Kerala during the Malayalam month of Meenam (March-April). The highlight is the Aswathy Kaavutheendal, occurring on the eve of the Bharani asterism. A mesmerizing sea of red envelops the temple as devotees witness oracles (velichappad) in a trance, offering prayers to the deity. The mystical experience unfolds as believers, immersed in spiritual euphoria, dance alongside the oracles.
During this sacred event, oracles, both men and women, dash around the temple, striking their heads with swords to signify communion with the Mother Goddess. Devotees energetically strike temple rafters with sticks and make offerings, creating a riveting spectacle. The Bharani festival commemorates the birth of Bhadrakali, who, according to legend, emerged from Lord Shiva's third eye to vanquish the demon Darika. This significant festival, especially revered in Northern Kerala, traces its roots to the ancient connections between Kodungalloor and Thondi, a region under Chera rule that housed their second capital. Anticipation builds each year as people eagerly await the sacred rituals and vibrant festivities.
