Athachamayam

Athachamayam is a vibrant cultural fiesta offering a rare glimpse into the diverse folk art traditions of Kerala. This grand celebration serves as the inaugural event for the ten-day Onam Festival. Taking place annually on the Atham asterism of the Malayalam month of Chingam, typically in August or September, Thripunithura, near Kochi, becomes the stage for this legendary ceremony, commemorating the triumph of the Raja (King) of Kochi.

The highlight of Athachamayam is a magnificent procession that symbolizes the regal splendor of the king and his retinue. The parade features caparisoned elephants, elaborately decorated floats, musical ensembles, and a rich array of folk art performances.
