Aqua Tourism in Alappuzha

With the entire world raving about the charm, simplicity and magnificence of the backwaters, it is natural to assume that Alappuzha has among the finest Aqua Tourism options in all of God’s Own Country. Blessed by its proximity to the sea, Alappuzha has always enjoyed a unique place in the maritime history of Kerala. With the Arabian Sea on the West and a vast network of lakes, lagoons and freshwater rivers crisscrossing it, it is home to many an extraordinary sight.

We must begin with Kerala’s very own ‘rice bowl’, the legendary region of Kuttanad, which is the only place in the world where farming is done below sea level. Its rustic and old school charm is a major attraction for visitors. Then we have Pathiramanal, a little island in the middle of Vembanad Lake, frequented by rare migratory birds from across the world. One must also never forget that this district is host to some of the greatest Snake Boat Races in the country. Its waters attract great crowds for the famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race, Alappuzha Tourism Boat Race, Champakkulam Moolam Boat Race and the Rajiv Gandhi Boat Race. Each has its own élan and zest that is distinct and mesmerising.
