Aranmula Boat Race

The Aranmula Boat Race is a traditional snake boat race held annually in the village of Aranmula in the state of Kerala, India. This boat race is a key event during the Onam festival, which is a harvest festival celebrated in Kerala. What sets the Aranmula Boat Race apart is the unique design of the participating boats, known as "Palliyodams" or snake boats, which are considered sacred and are associated with the Parthasarathy Temple in Aranmula.

Unlike other boat races in Kerala, the Aranmula Boat Race is not a competition between different teams. Instead, each boat represents one of the eight villages situated along the banks of the Pampa River. The participating teams row in unison to the rhythm of traditional songs and drumbeats. The oarsmen, often dressed in white dhotis, showcase incredible teamwork and coordination.

A significant aspect of the Aranmula Boat Race is its religious and cultural significance. The event is linked to the annual Uthrattathi Vallamkali, which is a commemoration of the installation of the idol of Lord Krishna at the Parthasarathy Temple. The boats, adorned with colorful silk umbrellas and golden lace, create a spectacular visual display as they glide through the Pampa River during the race.
