Description
The Ayilyam Mahotsavam is an annual celebration held at the Sree Nagaraja Swami Temple, an ancient shrine located in Vettikode, Alappuzha district, dedicated to the serpent Gods. This event is marked by a series of vibrant festivities and rituals, commencing seven days before the Ayilyam asterism. During this period, special ceremonies take place, including a noteworthy ceremonial procession from the temple to Meppallil Illam, an ancient Brahmin residence. Evening rituals feature the performance of Sarpabali, aimed at appeasing the serpent Gods. The festival, which occurs in the Malayalam month of Kanni (approximately September/October), attracts a substantial number of devotees from across the state, culminating in daily rituals to conclude the celebrations.
