Description
At the Poruvazhi Malanada Temple in Adoor, history takes an intriguing turn as the antagonist, Duryodhana from the Indian epic Mahabharata, is not only remembered but revered. This unique temple, devoid of an idol or sanctum sanctorum, challenges the notion that history favors the victor.
The annual March festival at the temple comes alive with the vibrant Malanada Kettukazcha event. Also known as Poruvizhi Peruviruthi Malanada Malakkuda Utsavam, the highlight is the procession of towering, intricately designed structures named Edupu Kala and Edupu Kuthira. These structures, reaching heights of 70 to 80 ft., lead massive processions, accompanied by traditional percussion instruments that form a harmonious orchestra.
Enthusiastic crowds either carry these structures on their shoulders or witness them placed on colossal chariots, creating a revelry that rivals any across Kerala. The festivities extend into the night with cultural programs, featuring highlights like Kathakali performances based on the story 'Nizhalkuthu.' The Poruvazhi Malanada Temple offers a unique celebration where the unconventional narrative and grandeur converge in a spectacle that transcends time.
