The Nehru Trophy Boat Race stands as a premier snake boat race in Kerala, held annually on the second Saturday of August, attracting a massive crowd. Nearly 100 ft long boats compete on Punnamada Lake, resonating with the tunes of old boat songs, creating a captivating spectacle. The race's origin dates back to 1952 when Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, enchanted by the majestic snake boats during his visit, leapt onto one himself. In commemoration, he donated a silver trophy in the form of a snake boat, giving rise to the event's name. The season comes alive with ceremonial water processions, water floats, and a mesmerizing display of chundan valloms (snake boats) and country rafts, showcasing the skilled artistry of expert oarsmen in an unforgettable show.
