Description
The Ochira Temple, nestled near the National Highway connecting Kollam and Alappuzha districts, stands apart with its unique worship approach—devoid of a definite layout or idol. Instead, the focus is on the Parabrahma, the universal consciousness. Renowned for its Ochira Kali festival, the temple showcases a distinctive celebration that captivates visitors.
The festival's highlight is a mock battle between two groups in the waterlogged field of Padanilam, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of drums. This symbolic battle pays homage to the historical conflict between the Kayamkulam and Ambalapuzha kingdoms. Boys and men, forming the two groups, joyously engage in the mock battle, wielding sticks instead of swords and playfully splashing muddy water at each other.
Marking the first two days of the Malayalam month of Mithunam (Mid-June), the Ochira Kali festival offers a fascinating glimpse into Kerala's cultural tapestry, where tradition, history, and unique rituals converge at the Ochira Temple.
