Description
Witnessing ritual dances and exuberant devotees immersed in spiritual ecstasy is a common sight at temple festivals in Kerala. However, the one-day Thaipooyam Festival at the Sree Subrahmanya Swamy Temple in Alappuzha stands out as a vibrant and ecstatic celebration, drawing crowds from across the state to honor Lord Subrahmanya, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi.
At the heart of its popularity is the legendary Kavadiyattom, a colorful ritualistic dance. Devotees elevate kavadis—elaborately adorned wooden arches with flowers and peacock feathers—on their shoulders, engaging in a mesmerizing performance. Some participants go to the extent of piercing their cheeks with lances, dancing in a trance-like state. The visuals of fervent followers swaying to the mythical beats of the chenda, accompanied by resounding shouts of ‘harohara,’ create an ethereal experience that can only be encountered in God’s Own Country.
